Washington, D.C. (May 24) -- A pelorus aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin. A pelorus is a gyro repeater which is used in conjunction with an alidade to obtain a visual bearing to an object on land. These bearings are then plotted on a navigational chart. The intersection of these plotted lines show a vessel's position on a chart. The Rankin is 175 feet long with primary missions of aids to navigation, marine environmental protection, search and rescue and domestic icebreaking. USCG photo by PA1 Pete Milnes
