ABOARD CGC ACACIA (March 19, 2004)?Sparks fly as Chief Boatswains Mate William Miller begins cutting holes in a steel mounting plate during the lull between working buoys aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Acacia. The plate will be used to mount a RADAR beacon to a 26-foot long, 12,000 pound lighted buoy. Acacia was in the Chicago area to check and replace buoys for the 2004 Great Lakes shipping season. Acacia is a 180-foot sea going buoy tender built in 1944 home ported in Charlevoix, Mich.
