SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 16, 2006)--Coast Guard Sector San Francisco members receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the famous "dungeon" after providing community outreach. Twenty-eight members volunteered their time to help the National Parks Service clean 75 cells and the kitchen in the former U.S. Army fort and later federal prison on Alcatraz Island. The "dungeon," which is pitch-black, was a former U.S. Army military outpost, nicknamed the "Citadel," whose foundation remains buried underneath the main prison building. Records show a former military prisoner was put in the "dungeon" for two weeks just for talking. USCG photo by PA3 Sabrina Arrayan
