Shaughnessy, who has served in the Coast Guard since 1969, is the proud son of former Coast Guardsman Gunners Mate Second Class Richard Shaughnessy who served proudly with the Coast Guard's only Medal of Honor winner Douglas Munro who was killed in action at Guadalcanal during World War I.
