    CDR Stone was a Coast Guard and Naval aviation pioneer who established a world speed record for amphibious planes and made history as one of the pilots of the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Stone was the first Coast Guard aviator, and took the first practical steps toward a Coast Guard air arm in 1915 when he, along with Lieutenant Norman Hall conceived of using aircraft for Coast Guard missions.
