Historically, the Coast Guard has always had a strong tradition of service in the New York region. So when the Army left Governors Island in 1966, The Coast Guard looked forward to a new home. Governors Island became a U.S. Coast Guard base - the largest in the world. In 1997 the Coast Guard ceased operations on Governors Island, ending almost two centuries of the island's use as a federal reservation devoted to the protection of New York and the nation.
