Fraternal Order of Police National Trustee Sgt. Chuck Schauss presented the Culbertson family with the FOP Medal of Valor given for a fallen law enforcement officer on April 30, 2009. Their father, BM1 Edgar Culbertson died in the line of duty in 1967 on this same pier in Duluth during a rescue attempt where three teenage boys also lost their life during a horrific storm. Recently uncovered documents confirm that Culbertson had law enforcement training and his name has been submitted to the National Law Enforcement Fund Memorial Committee to be added in May 2010.
