100506-N-6070S-033 Gulf of Mexico (May 6, 2010) -- An incendiary device rests on the deck of Marine Vessel Premier Explorer prior to being used in a controlled burn of concentrated oil in the Gulf of Mexico to prevent the damage of sensitive shoreline areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. The U.S. Coast Guard working in partnership with BP PLC, local residents, and other federal agencies are conducting controlled burns to aid in preventing the spread of oil following the April 20 explosion on Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit Deepwater Horizon.
