OSWEGO, N.Y. - Edward Fillingham, a native of Henderson Harbor, N.Y., holds his Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal after a formal ceremony at Coast Guard Station Oswego, during which he was presented with the distinguished award for risking his own life to save three boaters who nearly died in Lake Ontario April 17, 2009. When Fillingham heard cries for help from his Henderson Harbor home that afternoon, despite extremely dangerous conditions and the frigid water temperature, he launched his canoe, paddled 500 yards out and fought his way back to shore with the three survivors clinging to the side of his canoe, stopping several times to keep them from drowning.
