At the request of the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary boatcrews from Divisions 2 and 14, aboard Coast Guard Auxiliary Occoquan, VA Flotilla 14-06 Vessels 24999 and 43118, conducted special patrols on the Potomac River and adjoining waterways on September 20 and 21, 2003, to determine and report on the effects of Hurricane Isabel to the aids to navigation and maritime environment. The crew of the 24999 encountered an upside down picnic table; 55-gallon drum and large debris fields, all of which were floating, including the one shown in this photo, covering a vast distance, making navigation a hazard, requiring the best of boat handling skills. Hitting debris, such as that in the photo could cause serious damage to any vessel. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary boatcrews regularly practice their boating skills, to ensure proficiency when unusual circumstances are encountered during a search and rescue or other mission.
