A U.S. Coast Guard Boarding Team inspects a recreational boat on May 26, 2003 in Washington, DC, to ensure it meets all of the federal safety requirements. The Coast Guard may impose a civil penalty up to $1,000 for failure to comply with safety equipment requirements or other Federal requirements. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks (VSC), to help boaters determine if their vessels comply with Federal and State laws. A VSC is not a law enforcement action. No report to any law enforcement agency is made and there are no penalties for failure. The goal of the VSC program is to prevent safety related accidents and eliminate the receipt of safety equipment citations by the boater. Upon successful completion of the VSC, a decal is issued to the boat for the current year. For more information: www.safetyseal.net
