Ft. Worth, Texas - Coast Guard District 8 commander Joel Whitehead congratulates a new recruit during a swearing in ceremony at the fifth annual Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl here, Monday Dec. 31, 2007. The Armed Forces Bowl was a nationally televised college football game between the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons and the University of California Golden Bears. During halftime District 8 commander Rear Adm. Joel Whitehead conducted the Coast Guard swearing in ceremony for 25 recruits in front of a crowd of 41,000 football fans. Adm. Whitehead also participated in the game's opening coin toss along with Flag officers from the four other Armed Forces. The military themed football game featured a Coast Guard commercial during the 2nd quarter as well as various Coast Guard shout-outs from around the country and abroad. Before the game there was a Armed Forces Adventure area setup just outside the stadium, were football fans could look at a Coast Guard 25-foot response boat, as well as talk with crewmembers from Sector Houston-Galveston about the Coast Guard.
