Yellow boom surrounds a tiny spit of land in the waters off the coast of Terrebonne Parish, La., where hundreds of seabirds, including gulls, terns and pelicans, mate and nest. Coast Guard reservists are working with commercial boat crews to place and maintain a system of booms along the Louisiana Coast in order to protect the fragile ecosystem from oil contamination.
