On Jan. 28, 1980 at approximately 7:21 p.m. the Blackthorn and the motor tanker Capricorn collided by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge near St. Petersburg, Fla., resulting in the loss of 23 crewmen and the largest peacetime loss of life in Coast Guard history.
