HOUSTON - Chief Petty Officer Eddie Martinezlopez, a machinery technician aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Hatchet, lays a wreath in Galveston Bay Jan. 28, 2011, for the 31st anniversary memorial of the Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn.
On Jan. 28, 1980 at approximately 7:21 p.m. the Blackthorn and the motor tanker Capricorn collided by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge near St. Petersburg, Fla., resulting in the loss of 23 crewmen and the largest peacetime loss of life in Coast Guard history.
