HOUSTON - A memorial located outside at Sector Field Office Galveston is dedicated to the 23 Coast Guardsmen who lost their lives 31 years ago aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn Jan. 28, 2011.

On Jan. 28, 1980 at approximately 7:21 p.m. the Blackthorn and the motor tanker Capricorn collided by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge near St. Petersburg, Fla., resulting in the loss of 23 crewmen and the largest peacetime loss of life in Coast Guard history.
