Major Gen. John W. Nicholson, Jr., 82nd Airborne Division commanding general, shakes hands with John Aarsen, curator of the 82nd Abn. Div. Museum, following a ceremony in which Maj. Gen. Nicholson presented a copy of the book “A Bridge Too Far” to the 82nd Abn. Div. Museum, Jan. 21, 2014. The book detailing World War II’s Operation Market Garden, is signed by many veterans who fought during that battle, including Gen. Matthew D. Ridgway, commander of XVIII Airborne Corps during Operation Market Garden, Lt. Gen. James M. Gavin, commander of the 82nd during the operation, and Capt. James Megellas, who commanded the 82nd’s H Co., 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Megellas was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions while crossing the Waal River. Over the years, the book passed from the hands of the author, Cornelius Ryan, to Maj. Julian Cook – who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Military Willems Order, the highest honor of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for his bravery while serving as the commander of 3-504 PIR during Market Garden – to Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Michael Steele, 82nd commanding general from 1993-1995. The book will now take a place of honor in the Division Museum. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt.
