Pipes strewn along the newly built beach at NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility here in 2102 carry sand pumped from dredges offshore. The beach helped protect more than $1 billion in federal government and Commonwealth of Virginia assets located here during Hurricane Sandy. The Wallops Island facility is home to, not only NASA, but also the US Navy Surface Combat Systems Center and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport making this a growing economic generator for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the region.
