Gunnery Sgt. Joshua M. Utto, platoon sergeant, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, and a 34-year-old native of Minneapolis, recently completed the weeklong Marine Corps Combat Readiness Exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Feb. 4 to 8, 2014. During the exercise, Utto led a platoon of assault amphibious vehicles as they transported infantrymen with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, from sea to shore to secure the beach and capture land-based objectives. After more than a decade of fighting and training for land combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, infantry battalions within 1st Marine Division have reincorporated amphibious scenarios in their training events as part of the U.S. strategic pivot to the Pacific. The MCCRE offers crucial training that prepares the Marines for upcoming deployments around the world aboard U.S. Navy amphibious ships as part of Marine Expeditionary Units.
