Gunnery Sgt. Joshua Cook, a Drill Instructor School instructor, leads students in physical training Jan. 13, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Cook, a 31-year-old native of Hendersonville, N.C., stresses the importance of physical fitness to his students because as drill instructors, they will be expected to be stronger, faster and smarter than their recruits, many of whom will be young athletes. The Drill Instructor School on Parris Island and its counterpart in San Diego are responsible for training all future drill instructors in an intensive 11-week course.
