Paratroopers assigned to 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry Regiment, engage targets at 50 meters in arctic conditions during the battalion’s biathlon competition March 7 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The purpose of the training is to develop each paratrooper’s ability to ski over variable terrain and rapidly engage targets at 50 meters with accurate fire in arctic conditions. The ski course will cover 5 kilometers of variable terrain while the marksmanship portion will test the fundamentals of marksmanship, rapid and effective manipulation of individual weapon systems, and how to compensate for environmental conditions.
