Sgt. William Loughran IV, a drill instructor for Platoon 3017, shows Rct. Xakarey Baylor how to roll his utility uniform sleeves March 3, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The Commandant of the Marine Corps banned rolling utility uniform sleeves in October 2011, stating that if deployed Marines wore their sleeves down, Marines at home would show a unified front with their sleeves down. As of March 9, 2014, Marines will again distinguish themselves from the other military branches and roll their sleeves. Loughran, 32, is from Jacksonville, N.C. Baylor, 17, from Florence, S.C., is scheduled to graduate March 14, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
