A metal unit memorabilia piece belonging to retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. David Vozka depicts his former unit which was the first-ever airborne unit assigned to Fort Richardson, Alaska – F Company, 4th Airborne Battle Group, 23rd Infantry Regiment. The unit eventually gave way to C Company (Airborne), 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade, which was Vozka’s unit of assignment at the time of the great Alaska earthquake of 1964. Exactly 50 years prior to this photo, Vozka was enjoying a Friday evening game of pool with a comrade, in what is now the headquarters building for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, when the earthquake began. Vozka ran outside and grabbed onto an awning support pole so he would not fall as the ground heaved in 18 to 24-inch waves below his feet. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Smith/Released)
