Staff Sgt. Matthew F. Zimmer is awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and "V" device for his actions in Afghanistan, May 1, 2014. Zimmer, a member of the 103rd Rescue Squadron, was assigned to the 46th Expeditionary Rescue Squadron when, during a casualty evacuation in the Helmand River Valley his team was attacked by a second IED critically wounding an EOD technician three meters away from his location. Zimmer moved to help the technician, carrying him through 100 meters of unsecured terrain to the casualty collection point. Zimmer's actions resulted in the successful recovery of two fallen servicemembers, and saved the life of the wounded technician.
