Retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jose Navarro fires a sniper rifle during a visit to Forward Operating Base Shank in Afghanistan May 28, as part of Operation Proper Exit, a Troop’s First Foundation initiative allows wounded service members to return to the battlefield and leave on their own terms. Navarro was injured in Jalrez Valley, Afghanistan, in 2007 when his platoon was ambushed. As a result, he was burned on more than 35 percent of his body, had shrapnel in his left leg and a gunshot wound in his torso.
