Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Saul Martinez views the landscape of Afghanistan from a Black Hawk helicopter May 28, 2014, during Operation Proper Exit, a Troop’s First Foundation initiative that allows wounded service members to return to the battlefield and leave on their own terms. In 2007, Martinez was in the lead vehicle of a convoy in Salman Pak, Iraq, when an explosively formed projectile exploded. As a result, he became a bilateral amputee with massive tissue loss on his back and traumatic brain injury. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Lyndsey Prax)
