John Holladay, a retired Marine colonel, was presented the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device by his former battalion commander, Ted Hopgood, now a retired major general, on June 24, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Holladay earned the medal for his heroic actions on Feb. 14-15, 1968 as a platoon commander in 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Although wounded, Holladay led his platoon up a steep hill to a ridge where he coordinated air support and artillery fire into numerous active enemy strong points. (Photo by Cpl. Jennifer Schubert)
