U.S. Marines observe a Malaysian soldier demonstrate how to make rope from a vine as part of a jungle survival course June 2 during Exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training 2014 at Teluk Gorek Beach, Malaysia. The training in each phase of CARAT varies based on shared goals and available assets of the host nation and the U.S. Each phase promotes development of cooperative maritime security capabilities, enhances relationships and increases interoperability among participating forces. The Marines are with 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program.
