    Officials credit monitoring grass height around runways with helping to deter birds that prevent a hazard to aircraft operations. Mowers at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., ensure grass around the runway is more than seven inches high, because birds are less likely to land somewhere if they can't see each other.
