Michelle Spoo holds a photo of her late husband, James Spoo, and their dog, Diesel, then a puppy. Spoo was born June 4, 1971. He joined the Army in November 2001 and served as an explosives ordinance disposal technician, 702nd Explosive Ordinance Disposal detachment, 7th Combat Support Sustain Brigade at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, his second and final permanent assignment. He was injured in Afghanistan and progressing in his recovery through the hospital at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, prior to a heart attack while walking Diesel that ended his life on May 15, 2014.
