Paul R. Hallman Sr. poses with retired North Carolina State Senator, Bob Atwater during a ceremony in Hallman’s honor. The ceremony held at the 108th Training Command (IET) Headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 16, 2014 was one day shy of the 70th Anniversary of Hallman’s 43rd combat flight during World War II. On that flight, Hallman, who served as an engineer on a B24J “Liberator”, and his crew were shot down while performing a bombing mission over a Ploesti, Romania oil Refinery. Hallman and several other survivors of the flight were captured by German forces and held in Romania for several months until they were liberated by the Russian Army and returned to American Forces later that year.
