Staff Sgt. Phillip Flory, an Elk Grove, Calif., native with Bronco Troop, 1-14 Cav., is currently serving in the position of platoon sergeant, a position normally reserved for a sergeant first class. What makes this noteworthy is that he is also standing in as acting platoon leader while his lieutenant is away on temporary duty, and he's doing it while deployed for nearly two months to the Orchard Combat Training Center, south of Boise, Idaho, where his squadron is conducting opposing force operations in support of the Idaho National Guard.
