The only known photograph of retired U.S. Army Sgt. Frankie Ramirez wearing his World War II-era uniform hangs in the office of his home in Killeen, Texas, July 12, 2014. Ramirez enlisted in the Army as a teenager in 1941, and joined the Philippine Scouts, a unit comprised of native Filipinos
assigned to the United States Army Philippine Department. He fought in the Battle of Corregidor as an anti-aircraft gunner on the tiny Carabao Island. The Japanese were met with intense resistance from American and Filipino
holdouts until the Allies finally surrendered after the fall of Bataan on May 6, 1942. Ramirez was taken captive and held in the Camp O'Donnell prison
camp with survivors of the Bataan Death March. Because he was a native
Filipino, he was released after three months on condition that he would not
take up arms again. He immediately joined a guerrilla group and continued to
fight the Japanese until the war ended. He continued to serve for 16 years
after WWII, and fought in the Korean War too. These days, Ramirez, at 92, lives a quiet life in Killeen with his wife, Christa. (U.S. Army photo by
