Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Allen G. Carpenter, the U.S. Army’s first Drill Sergeant of the Year award winner, addresses the competitors at the 2014 Army Drill Sergeant of the Year competition awards presentation. The competition has been held annually at Fort Jackson, S.C., since 1969, but did not include participants from the Reserve component until 1972. This year, two competitors from the 108th Training Command (IET), Staff Sgt. Christopher Croslin, 95th Training Division (IET), and Sgt. 1st Class Alex Montero, 98th Training Division (IET), are fighting for the title of Army Reserve Drill Sergeant of the Year.
