Ms. Patricia Adams (right), Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Civilian Human Resources, and Rear Adm. Craig Faller, prospective commander, Navy Recruiting Command, salute the national anthem during a capping ceremony at Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy's only boot camp, Oct. 2. The capping ceremony is held after a recruit completes Battle Stations 21 on board the 210-foot-long Arleigh Burke-class destroyer simulator, USS Trayer (BST 21). Battle Stations is a series of 17 evolutions in a 12-hour period that tests a recruit on everything they have been trained to do on board a Navy ship -- from line handling and supplies on load to fire fighting, mass casualty drills and flooding damage control -- before they can graduate from RTC. The capping ceremony, where recruits trade in their Recruit ball cap for a Navy ball cap, is also a rite of passage signifying a recruit is now a Sailor. Following the capping ceremony, Adams was the Reviewing Officer and Faller the Guest of Honor for RTC's weekly graduation. (U.S. Navy photo by Scott A. Thornbloom/Released)
