Staff Sgt. Cheryle Milton currently serves as a Marine Corps drill instructor with Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Milton joined the Marine Corps in February 2000 and became a drill instructor in September 2012. “My drill instructors instilled in me that lack of determination and failure is never an option,” said Milton, a 35-year-old native of Mobile, Ala. “I wanted to pass this knowledge to my female recruits so they will keep it with them in either a garrison or combat environment.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 20,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
