Troopers from the 1st Cavalry Division break new ground with Armed Forces Young Men’s Christian Association Board members and Harker Heights city officials during a ground-breaking ceremony held Oct. 4 in Harker Heights. The ceremony marked the beginning of construction for a new 50,000-square foot facility to serve Soldiers and family members of the Fort Hood and Harker Heights community. The building will be located at the Purser Family Park on Mountain Lion Road and will feature a range of classes and health programs. “We wanted to give something back to the Soldiers in the area by providing them with world-class service facilities,” said Larry Linder, the Armed Forces YMCA executive director. “It’s just our way of saying ‘thanks’ to the men and women from Fort Hood who work hard to protect us each day,” he said. The Armed Services YMCA is slated to open in October 2015. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Michael Dator, 3rd Cavalry Regiment Public Affairs (released).
