U.S. Army Maj. Ruth Diaz, a Civil Affairs Officer with US Army South, give away school kits during a Medical Readiness Training Exercise as part of the Beyond the Horizon 2009 exercise in Arenoso, Dominican Republic, on March 17. Beyond the Horizon is a new concept that integrates many United States Army South events under one umbrella thereby making the best use of the resources available. This innovative approach benefits many rural communities while simultaneously building solid partner nation relationships. This exercise provides an excellent opportunity for U.S. service members to refine engineering and medical support skills while improving quality of life for the people of our partner nations. Another benefit is the opportunity for sharing knowledge and experience to build stronger bonds between the partnering governments. The scope of this overseas training exercise and civic action mission include renovations in various schools, medical clinics, community centers and the construction of a new school.
