Asha Beachom, right, a senior at Hampton Uplift Preparatory charter school in Dallas, takes a water sample Thursday under the watchful eye of Dr. Dian Smith, a research scientist with the University of North Texas and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility. Some 55 seniors in the advanced placement environmental science class also helped plant native aquatic emergent species at the Fort Worth District’s Lower Chain of Wetlands project in southeast Dallas. The wetland construction project is a Corps of Engineers partnership with the city of Dallas, which combines flood risk management and ecosystem restoration on the site of a former landfill and golf course in the Trinity River drainage.
