The patrol craft USS Squall (PC 7) steams in the Arabian Gulf acting as a small boat threat toward guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57) during a simulated strait transit while participating in Spartan Kopis (SK) 15-01. SK is a quarterly exercise that integrates surface and aviation units’ ability to utilize established tactics, techniques and procedures against small boat threats as well as maintaining mine countermeasure defense to eliminate maritime surface threats. Mitscher, home-ported in Norfolk, Va., is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the region.
