Lt. Col. Jaime Macias, right, addresses the Marines of Marine Wing Communication Squadron 28 following a 10-mile squadron conditioning hike as part of the Leonidas Awards competition at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C. March 5, 2015. The hike was the capstone event of the squadron’s biannual Leonidas Award competition, which pitted Marines from the squadron’s three companies against one another for a place in MWCS-28 history. The Leonidas Award serves to build camaraderie and esprit de corps within the noncommissioned officer and junior ranks of the squadron. Macias is the squadron’s commanding officer, and a native of Queens, N.Y.
