Linda M. Hoffman, an education technician with the Joint Education Center, 55, from Temecula, Calif., talks to a Marine about the benefits the Post-9/11 GI Bill offers to Marines and Sailors at Camp Pendleton July 16. The Post-9/11 GI Bill will be effective Aug. 1. Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, service members may receive a tuition and fees payment that is paid directly to the school and does not cost more than the tuition and fees at the most expensive state institution of higher learning, and a monthly housing allowance based on the basic allowance for housing for an E-5 with dependents. This amount is based on the ZIP code of the location of the school they are attending. They also receive an annual book stipend of $1,000 paid proportionately based on enrollment. Under all the other GI Bills they will receive a monthly payment at a rate set by Congress that does not vary based on their expenses.
