Tim Kavanaugh, the supervisory park ranger for visitor services and interpretation at the Vicksburg National Military Park Park in Vicksburg, Miss., stands at tour point “Fort Hill,” a 350-foot bluff that overlooked the Mississippi River, explaining how the terrain worked for the Confederates and against Union troops in the siege of Vicksburg. Kavanaugh led a tour for Soldiers of the 412th Theater Engineer Command June 7.
