Tim Kavanaugh, the supervisory park ranger for visitor services and interpretation at the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Miss., stands at the tour point “Battery De Golyer” explaining “every Soldier became an engineer” by digging trenches for protection against enemy lines toward the Illinois memorial monument in the background during the siege of Vicksburg. Kavanaugh led a tour for Soldiers of the 412th Theater Engineer Command June 7.
