150517-N-TP976-016 U.S. 5th FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (May 17, 2015) – Culinary Specialist 1st Class Erik Eckert (left) and Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Kyle Maliszewki pose with items received from Operation Gratitude aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98). Operation Gratitude annually sends more than 150,000 care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and handmade items, as well as personal letters of appreciation, to new recruits, veterans, first responders, wounded warriors, care givers and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas. Forrest Sherman is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as part of Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the region.
