Soldiers with 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Field Artillery Brigade, stand in formation to honor their fallen comrades, July 24, 2015, on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. On July 24, 2010, Soldiers with 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, were in a mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle, one of the heaviest and sturdiest vehicles used by U.S. troops. Four Soldiers were killed when their vehicle struck a hidden explosive device in the city of Qalat in Zabul province, just east of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. Lt. Col. James R. Dunwoody, battalion commander, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, and Sgt. Maj. Cesar Zertuche, 17th FA BDE, remind the Soldiers of the ultimate sacrifice these four, “First Round,” Soldiers made. Staff Sgt. Conrad A. Mora, 24, of San Diego; Sgt. Daniel Lim, 23, of Cypress, Calif., Spc. Joseph A. Bauer, 27, of Cincinnati; and Pfc. Andrew L. Hand, 25, of Enterprise, Ala. were memorialized prior to the start of the day.
"Each of these heroes stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live and grow and increase in its blessings." -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt
