Theodore Cothran, far right, a Martial Arts Instructor-Trainer for Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Martial Arts Instructor Course 205-15, referees a sparring match between students June 27, 2015, aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C. A sparring event was one of many training portions included in the students’ final challenge before earning the certification that will allow them to train Marines back at their parent commands in becoming more skilled martial artists. The final challenge was more than six hours long and tested the Marines’ physical, mental and moral toughness throughout the day.
