Col. Colin Tuley, commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, thanks the attendees of the sunset march at the Waal River near Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Sept. 17. The sunset march tradition honors the 48 men who died in combat during the Waal River crossing in 1944. One at a time, the 48 streetlights on the bridge illuminate, representing Paratroopers of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 307th Engineer Battalion that were killed in combat while crossing the river during Operation Market Garden. This year, nearly 1,000 paratroopers from the U.S., U.K., the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Poland participated in a weeklong series of events commemorating the 71st Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, the allied offensive in World War II that included the largest airborne operation in history.
