NEWPORT, R.I. (Oct. 7, 2015) Cmdr. Monique Gourdine-Shaw makes a point during classroom discussion as George Oliver III, associate professor in Joint Military Operations, facilitates the class at Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, R.I. Gourdine-Shaw is the first Navy podiatrist to attend the school and is focused on improving her leadership skills while getting her master’s degree. She has been deployed to the Middle East as an orthopaedic/traumatology surgeon mentor diagnosing and treating foot and ankle trauma, including blast injuries and other lower extremity pathologies.
