From 1922 to 1934, Ur, located near the modern city of An Nasiriyah, Iraq, was the site of extensive excavations by Sir Leonard Woolley, who was working on behalf of the University of Pennsylvania and the British Museum. While others had done preliminary work, Woolley and his team measured the ziggurat, found other buildings that were part of the complex and gathered information about its outward appearance.
